What is the status of and projected completion of the construction at St. Thomas More? Fred Raiford, director of the Department of Public Works, responded: on Thursday April 22,2004 The Department of Public Works was responsible for the work that took place on Goodwood Boulevard near St. Thomas More Catholic Church. The department was asked by the Sherwood Forest Homeowners Association and the St. Thomas More Catholic Church to develop a plan to prevent people from driving on medians near the church. Even with the "no parking" signs, people were parking in the median. To correct this, the city-parish, at its expense, installed wooden poles to prevent cars from parking on or cutting across the median. One evaluation said the roots of the oak trees were being damaged. I asked my staff to protect the oak trees and to spread mulch along the root areas for protection. At the same time, I believed we should clean the area and mulch the remaining trees and bushes to upgrade the area. This area will require less maintenance in the future except for periodically mulching about once or twice a year. Follow-up a year later...it seems that the project is completed and the plan has been working. I spoke to one of the STM members and they say it works much better now. Festival 2005 should begin Friday, April 29, 2005 for this year. Information about the fair can be found in their web newsletter "Read the Tower". It is great when you can look back and see that good communication and community teamwork works out for everyone. Thanks to Fred Raiford and DPW as well.
