Two elderly Baton Rouge residents were robbed this weekend
by men who barged into their homes and demanded money,
police said. The incidents are similar to the
burglaries of three elderly residents on Jan. 23, police
spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said Monday.
McKneely would
not say whether the burglaries were related. “There
are similarities in the way these burglaries were
conducted,” he said. “But we can’t say at this time whether
they were related.”
The first of the two burglaries this weekend happened
around 11 p.m. Saturday on Mollylea Drive near South Sharp
Road, McKneely said. The second incident occurred
around 4:30 a.m. Sunday on Bronzebrush Drive near
Cedarcrest Avenue, he said. Both victims, a man and a
woman, are 82 years old, McKneely said. Neither was injured.
The burglar in each of the incidents was described as a
white man, McKneely said. Neither victim saw a weapon.
All three victims of the Jan. 23 burglaries were in their
early 80s, police have said. During those burglaries, men
burst into the victims’ homes and demanded money.
One victim, an 80-year-old man who lives in the Perkins
Road and Congress Boulevard area, was punched and threatened
to be shot, police have said. He described his
assailant as a black man about 6 feet tall and weighing 180
pounds. The burglar was wearing dark hooded clothing and had
a bandana over his face.
The other two victims on Jan. 23 were not hurt, police
have said. An 81-year-old woman who lives in the South
Sherwood Forest Boulevard-Goodwood Avenue area said her
burglar fled when she told him she didn’t have any money.
She described her assailant as a white man about 5 feet 7
inches tall, weighing 140 pounds and wearing a white ski
cap.
An 82-year-old woman in the Cedarcrest Avenue and Old
Hammond Highway area told police a man ran into her bedroom,
pulled her out of bed and demanded money. He grabbed her
purse off the dresser and left. She was only able to
describe her assailant as a skinny man, police have said.
Police spokesman Sgt. Don Kelly has encouraged elderly
residents, especially those living alone, to be aware of the
burglaries and take protective steps. The steps, Kelly
has said, include making sure windows and doors are locked
and reinforced, alarm systems are installed and armed, and a
telephone is kept next to the bed.
