Do not open your door to just anyone...verify who is there before opening your door it (to be safe).  Have a plan as to what you will do if there is an emergency.  We live in a different world now and it pays to be careful.

Chief Leduff

I would like to personally thank you for the great work your officers did in solving the home invasion crimes.  I can assure you there are a lot of people who will sleep better tonight.  Even though these crimes have been solved, I know we as home owners cannot let our guard down.  We have to do our part to keep ourselves as safe as possible.  I am hoping to send a message to our association members reminding them of this.  Thank you again for a job well done.

A resident on Montgomery called this morning to report a young, white male walked up his driveway at about 9 AM and asked for work.  The trespasser had short hair, wore blue jeans and a white T-shirt and was on foot.  He was headed west on Buckingham.

A Shelby Drive resident reported that on 1/23 (b/t 2:30 - 3:00 am) an attempted home invasion occurred across the street.  The perpetrator was a black male who arrived on a bike.  When the male resident confronted him with a gun the perp fled and was picked up in a black truck.  Several other individuals were in the truck. A report was filed with BRCP.

Robbers target elderly; total now 5

Two elderly Baton Rouge residents were robbed this weekend by men who barged into their homes and demanded money, police said.  The incidents are similar to the burglaries of three elderly residents on Jan. 23, police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said Monday.

McKneely would not say whether the burglaries were related.  “There are similarities in the way these burglaries were conducted,” he said. “But we can’t say at this time whether they were related.”

The first of the two burglaries this weekend happened around 11 p.m. Saturday on Mollylea Drive near South Sharp Road, McKneely said.  The second incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. Sunday on Bronzebrush Drive near Cedarcrest  Avenue, he said.  Both victims, a man and a woman, are 82 years old, McKneely said. Neither was injured.

The burglar in each of the incidents was described as a white man, McKneely said. Neither victim saw a weapon.  All three victims of the Jan. 23 burglaries were in their early 80s, police have said. During those burglaries, men burst into the victims’ homes and demanded money.

One victim, an 80-year-old man who lives in the Perkins Road and Congress Boulevard area, was punched and threatened to be shot, police have said.  He described his assailant as a black man about 6 feet tall and weighing 180 pounds. The burglar was wearing dark hooded clothing and had a bandana over his face.

The other two victims on Jan. 23 were not hurt, police have said.  An 81-year-old woman who lives in the South Sherwood Forest Boulevard-Goodwood Avenue area said her burglar fled when she told him she didn’t have any money.  She described her assailant as a white man about 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 140 pounds and wearing a white ski cap.

An 82-year-old woman in the Cedarcrest Avenue and Old Hammond Highway area told police a man ran into her bedroom, pulled her out of bed and demanded money. He grabbed her purse off the dresser and left. She was only able to describe her assailant as a skinny man, police have said.

Police spokesman Sgt. Don Kelly has encouraged elderly residents, especially those living alone, to be aware of the burglaries and take protective steps.  The steps, Kelly has said, include making sure windows and doors are locked and reinforced, alarm systems are installed and armed, and a telephone is kept next to the bed.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to call police at (225) 389-3845 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867

Vehicles and trailers/watercraft parked illegally in the grass, on the sidewalk, and in the right-of-way or neutral ground or strip of land between the property line and curb (on grass or concrete) are still a problem in Sherwood Forest.  The Sheriff’s Office security patrol continues to monitor this and issue tickets for violations.

Parking on the street in excess of nine consecutive hours and parking against the flow of traffic continue to be problems, also.  Tickets are issued for this as well.  Please notify your guests of the parking requirements, so they may also remain in compliance.

If you observe chronic violations of the parking/traffic ordinances or have security concerns or questions, you may contact the SFCA security volunteer at 273-1353 for assistance.  You do not have to provide your name or phone number; you may simply provide the information necessary for the security patrol to investigate the concern.  Since the line is not manned by full or part-time staff, messages usually need to be left.  (Evening calls are more likely to be answered.)

Disabled vehicles – this summer, in a matter of weeks, three disabled vehicles parked on driveways were removed from a block-long street in Sherwood Forest.  The appearance of that street was vastly improved in a short amount of time.  It started with a phone call to the Sherwood Forest Citizens Association (“SFCA”) security line – 273-1353.  The city-parish ordinance and procedures for removal of disabled vehicles (even parked on driveways), as well as the effort of our security patrol, make such a removal very easy for concerned neighbors.

If you desire a return call and prefer not to provide your name and phone number, that information does not need to be retained once the return call is made – just ask.  Parking and security-related concerns are sent to the security patrol for any necessary enforcement or action as it determines.

Dues-paying members may request that their house be patrolled while they are away.  The patrol can include a daily ‘walk-around’ on the outside of the house to check windows, doors, etc. or just a ‘close-eye’ pass-by while on security patrol, depending on the request of the member.  No request has been denied, but there may be a limit to the number of days each member may receive the service in a given year, if workload necessitates.
Security Alert: Recently, there were two break-ins of outside storage areas, a few houses apart, in the 12000 block of E. Robin Hood Drive with the perpetrator's prying open the doors and taking a riding mower and other lawn equipment.

Reported 03-15-07
Thursday (8th) on Buckingham (this was before DST so it was dark) the man's daughter left the home out of the front door around 7:00pm to walk to her car in the driveway.  The father left out of the back door to his car which he proceeded to back out and was stopped by his daughter.  She said that a man got out of his truck and was approaching her when he saw the other car backing out of the drive.  He quickly went to his truck and left the area.  The father said he did notice a white truck (either a Ford or a Chevy) parked off the curb at his next door neighbor's home (but didn't think much of it).  It is unknown who the stranger was or did either of them recognize the vehicle.  As stated before it was a white pickup truck, two door full size and they think it was a Ford or Chevy.
